The Sandburg Foundation offers a variety of after school classes throughout the school year. Enrollment forms are available in the office. The classes run on a 6-week schedule. All students are welcome (with the exception of kindergarten students for the first session). Kindergarteners are welcome to enroll during the second session and throughout the rest of the school year. Back to School Night

When: Usually the second or third Thursday back to school
This event welcomes families back to school-there will be a short message from the Principal (in the multipurpose room), and then parents/guardians are encouraged to attend a brief presentation by the classroom teacher(s) detailing expectations for the year.
Bingo Night
Sponsored By: The Sandburg Foundation
When: A Saturday evening in September
A free game night! Five games of bingo in the multi-purpose room, all free.
The winners receive great prizes!!
Biz town
Sponsored By: The Sandburg Foundation and Junior Achievement
When: Spring
Biztown is an all-day event for 5th graders to run a town. This is an amazing experience for all involved. The students apply business skills learned to running a small group of stores, banks, and a town hall!
Book Fair

Scholastic Books provides the books. Sandburg opens a room up for book purchases. It's a great time to see what your children enjoy reading and to stock up!
BoxTops for Education
Sponsored By: The Sandburg Foundation
When: Throughout the school year
Box Tops for Education has gone digital! Download the app, scan your receipts, and earn money for Sandburg! For items that still have the physical Box Top coupon, the Sandburg Foundation will still collect them from the student body. Box Tops can be returned to the classroom or office where a Foundation representative will collect and process them. Funds from the Box Tops program provide supplies for the classrooms, support ongoing programs, and assist with new enrichment projects!

The school calendar of events, holidays, and organization meetings is provided on the back of all Tiger folders (each student receives a Tiger folder at the beginning of the school year). The calendar is also available on the Sandburg Website.

Parents/guardians will receive Sandburg Elementary email blasts that provide monthly calendar updates and highlight other school activities throughout the year. It is separate from the Sandburg Sunday Notes sent by the Principal.

Fall Carnival

This is our biggest event of the fall! While sponsored by the Foundation, all school organizations help with this terrific event. Wear your costumes! There are games for the children to play, a cake walk, a silent auction, a cake design contest, face painting, popcorn, food, and more. There will be pre-event ticket sales throughout that week.

IXL is a math computer program designed to help Sandburg students practice the skills they are learning in the classroom.

Job share
Two teachers share the responsibilities of one classroom-the time can be shared in various ways (mutually agreed upon by both teachers involved) that include a 20/80, 40/60, or 50/50 split. While two teachers share the classroom, only one teacher is present at a time with the exception of important events.
Jog-A-Thon

When: Third Friday in April, during the school day
The Jog-A-Thon is the largest fundraising event sponsored by the Sandburg Foundation. The funds raised through this event support many of the ongoing programs. Historically, the funds have supported our enrichment programs (yoga, STEM Classes, etc.), our library assistant, and many other opportunities for students. Every Sandburg student receives a T-Shirt and participates in this amazing, fun-filled day. Please visit the Sandburg Foundation website for more details.
Junior Achievement

Morning Assemblies

We look forward to when campus reopens to parents, where we will invite you to join us for the Friday morning assemblies. The entire school gathers around the flagpole to celebrate accomplishments, discusses weekly plans, and gets fired up with the Sandburg School Song!
Movie Nights

Multi-Cultural Fair

This campus-wide event is a fun time where families from various cultures show off their food, dress, and unique things from their country of origin. There are dancers, singers and other performances.
Multi-Purpose Room
This is our main meeting room on campus, located directly across from the Main Office. Many of our evening programs are held in this room.
Music Program
Our 4th and 5th grade students have a wonderful opportunity to join the school's music program. Students can choose Band or Orchestra. We are fortunate to have wonderful music teachers.

Spring Open House is the opposite of Back to School Night-instead of the parents/guardians listening to the teacher presentations, the student show case their work and what they have accomplished throughout the year.

Paws is the name of our Sandburg Tiger school mascot. Paws attends many school events and is always a great ambassador for Tiger pride!

All students will have their picture taken on Picture Day. Families will have the opportunity to purchase photo packages from the photography studio directly. More details will come home ahead of this event. Spring photos are also offered as a courtesy to all students, but photos are not used in the school yearbook.

Room Parent
Volunteering to be a room parent is a great way to get involved with your child's class and the Sandburg community. The room parents work with the teacher and Sandburg Foundation to provide information to families in their class and coordinate classroom level activities. Please contact your child's teacher to volunteer!
Running/Walking Club

When: Everyday at 7:25 a.m.
The running and walking club meets throughout the school year. The purpose of the club is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. It is a great way to start the day! Parents and siblings are welcome too! Tiger paw charms are awarded for achieving milestones (every 5 miles, marathon distance).

Safety Patrol
The Safety Patrol - run by 5th grade and parent volunteers - assists students and their families with navigating the crosswalk on Ave Del Gato both before school and afterschool.
Sandburg Foundation
Regular Foundation Meetings: the third Thursday of every month at 6:00 p.m.
Where: In the library
The Sandburg Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing additional financial support and programs to Sandburg Elementary School. These meetings include budget planning, overview of both the engagement and enrichment arms, updates to the members on any changes, and to solicit inputs.

SGT: School Governance Team
Regular SGT Meetings: the last Thursday of the month at 12:30 pm
Where: Teams
SGT is a site-based decision-making group created through a local agreement between San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and the San Diego Education Association (SDEA). SGT is comprised of SDEA members, parent/community members and others, which include California School Employees Association (CSEA) representatives.
SSC: School Site Council
Regular SSC Meetings: the last Thursday of the month at 12:30 pm
Where: Teams
The SSC plans school goals and objectives, reviews and approves program modifications, monitors progress, and evaluates outcomes. The Council is charged with the legal responsibility to ensure services that meet the needs of special student populations. The SSC is also responsible for the categorical funding.
Staff Appreciation Week

The Sandburg community has a formal appreciation week in the spring to celebrate the accomplishments of our staff and recognize the amazing work they do with our children. Individual classrooms and grade level programs will be organized in the spring through e-blasts and Room Parents.

Take A Tiger Out

The Sandburg Foundation coordinates a dinner program with a local restaurant each month of the school year. If you bring a flyer to dinner with you on our Tiger night, the participating restaurant donates part of the nightly proceeds back to the Foundation. Funds from Tiger dinners are used to sponsor school events. Buy a shopping card ahead of time, and you not only get a great meal, but provide funds to the school through both the shopping card program and the Tiger dinner program!

Tiger Paws (tokens)
Students who participate in the Running/Walking club earn Tiger Paw charms after completing 5 miles of running/walking.
Traffic Circle
The Traffic Circle is a volunteer/student run process where students can be dropped off safely in the morning. Parents pull into Sandburg's parking lot, and a volunteer will assist the student in exiting the vehicle.

Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK)
Students that turn 4 before September 1st are eligible for Universal Transitional Kindergarten. UTK is the new grade level proceeding Kindergarten.

You can help in a classroom, join the Sandburg Foundation, Dad's Club, Running/Walking Club, SGT, SSC, be a room parent, help at the traffic circle-any help is always welcome!
